There were police cruisers with flashing lights in the lead and fire engines sounding their horns close behind when approximately 50 people walked from Espanola’s Town Hall through the downtown core as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

This event is meant to raise awareness of Ontario Special Olympics Summer games which takes place in Newmarket, ON on July 10-14. Torch runs are being held throughout the province this spring and will culminate with athletes carrying the torch into the summer games’ opening ceremonies.

On June 6th, 2013, Community Living Espanola showed true Olympic spirit; walking proudly with law enforcement and carrying the Espanola Special Olympic banner, the Community Living Espanola banner and of course, the infamous torch! Horns were honking and people were waving in true community fashion as they walked by. Refreshments were served when they returned to the Town Hall; an awesome way to end an awesome day!

kevinOne of the torch run participants was Special Olympian Kevin. Kevin has participated in curling and track and most recently in Special Olympics Bowling. He says of carrying the torch, “I felt proud because I carried it all by myself everywhere I went. I like doing things with Special Olympics!”
